Analogue Cordless Phone Versus Digital: A Comparison

The analogue cordless phone has been around for quite some time now. Cordless phones have gained popularity for their portability. In a normal telephone, a wire is connected in between the head set and the bass. In a cordless phone, there is no wire. However, the signal transmission takes place between the headset and the base through via frequency. This frequency is different for different brands of cordless phones.

When using an analogue cordless phone, the voice of the user is taken as in input in the headset and simply converted to electrical pulses. These pulses are then transmitted over the allocated frequency to the base. The base then transmits the message over the phone line. There are many problems linked with the usage of analog cordless phones. Analog cordless phones provide an excellent voice quality but their range is very short. Range is defined as the distance between the headset and the base of the cordless phone. Analog cordless phone users will complain of distortion in case the phone is taken near fax machines, printers or any other digital equipment. Another problem with analog cordless phones is that their signals are easy to tamper with. The transmitted signals are not encrypted or simply stated, digitized, when they are being transmitted. Anyone with a FM scanner device can easily over hear conversations.

A digital cordless phone follows the same principle of voice transmission as an analog cordless phone. However, the voice being transmitted is encrypted, as to prevent any eavesdropping. The voice signal is not converted to a pulse in this case. It is converted to a set of zeros and ones, thus encrypting the signal. It is very hard to tamper with a signal that is encrypted. Digital cordless phones have a longer range, but the voice quality is as good as an analogue cordless phone. Digital cordless phones are designed to face minimum interference. In case they do face interference, most digital cordless phones will switch frequencies to avoid distortion.

These days one gets to choose whether to purchase an analog cordless phone or a digital one. Digital cordless phones are relatively new as they use modern techniques when it comes to voice transmission. This makes them expensive in comparison to analog cordless phones. Even with the innovation of new digital technology, analog cordless phones are still in demand these days. The main reason for this is their availability and low price in comparison to digital cordless phones.
