Choosing A VoIP Device

Choosing a VoIP device for you business can be a challenge. However, if you consider your options carefully, the decision to resort to internet telephony can prove to be highly beneficial.

The first thing that you need to make sure when looking to buy a VoIP phone device is that it is compatible with your current hardware infrastructure. This is to ensure that you don’t have to buy specialized hardware in order for the VoIP-based device to work. You should also try to choose a device that comes with an easy-to-use management interface.

The device should make use of the several available networks i.e. internet, extranets, intranet, PSTN etc in order to route calls effectively. All calls should be able to travel to their destinations through the most inexpensive route on hand.

Make sure you select an up to date VoIP set-up, rather than an upgraded adapter-based system. While you may decide to equip your current phone system with VoIP adapters, this may not prove to be the most intelligent decision in the long run.  The only benefit of using this approach is that you will be able to transfer calls over an IP, but you will not be able to benefit from other VoIP features, for instance, the option to hook up data directories with your phone system and the option to make use of all networks available to route each call in the most effective way.

Look for VoIP devices that offer true portability in order to enable you to make and receive phone calls from any place in the world. The VoIP system should be able to function like webmail where the only thing sender requires is the receiver’s id, while the receiver should just be able to log in to retrieve messages.

While fancy looking phones may appear attractive, you should focus on the features. Computer these days are equipped with microphones and speakers and if you make use of these, there will be no need to have a separate phone for each employee. All you need to do is to install softphones and enjoy great cost savings.

Last but not least, the decision to choose a VoIP device should depend on the benefits it offers. You shouldn’t focus only on how the device will help you reduce your telephone expenses. Instead, you should also consider how it will assist your organization and enhance productivity. There is no point of spending on a device if it’s difficult to tackle and/or doesn’t enhance productivity.
